Baglieri Collection

The collection consists of 95 specimens, all mounted, belonging to the order of the Charadriiformes. The collection is of considerable historical and scientific value both for the number of species present (the collection includes 45 of the 58 species (77%) of the Italian avifauna relating to this order) and for the variety of liveries in their plumage, which also makes it a valid didactic tool. The collection was assembled during the years 1967-1979 mainly with Sicilian speciments from the south-eastern area of Sicily by the naturalist Salvatore Baglieri. The collection, arranged according to a systematic criterion (the catalog created by Grasso & Ientile, 1997 is available) is kept in cabinets located along the corridor leading to the museum.

The collection is in excellent condition; the few specimens attacked by molds have been restored after their purchase .
